The above chart shows the specifications of various nibs. Standard grade represents the percent of cobalt content. Carbide dies consist of tungsten carbide and cobalt. The higher the percentage of cobalt the softer the die. The lower the percentage the harder but more brittle the die. The harder die will give longer die life. If incoming stock or impact on the die is too severe, it should have a higher cobalt content so it has some 'give' on impact. These are individual decisions made according to the material drawn, reduction and lubrication.
Maximum hole sizes are estimated, based on 16 degree angle and drawing soft materials. This chart will help you judge which nib size is the most practical to purchase for your needs.
We also carry an inbetween sized finished die - The Imperial CR5. It is sold finished only, not as a rough core. This is an economical die for certain applications.
We also supply custom designed nibs. |
